The allies reach Tuscany in the middle of June, after the liberation of Rome. Also Florence and the province witness long and intense battles, at the beginning on the southern hills and later in the city when the Wehrmacht destroys the bridges on the river Arno and the area around the Ponte Vecchio in order to stop the enemies’ advance. Two months pass between the liberation of Certaldo and the liberation of Firenzuola.
In Florence the partisans put into action the CTLN’s call for rising and become protagonists of the battle for the city’s liberation. They anticipate the entry of the allies and hold the clash with the Germans and the fascist snipers for about a month.
In the province the German army’s retreat causes considerable destruction of buildings and communication routes, sacking and dispossessions.
