Field marshal Kesselring surrounded by German officers in the Mugello area, summer 1944

The Nazi occupation exerts widespread violence against the population also in Italy.

In Tuscany violence intensifies in summer 1944 when the Germans commit numerous massacres of civilians during their “aggressive retreat”.

On the contrary to other areas of the region, in the province of Florence slaughters of great proportions do not take place, but continuous cases of violence against individuals and small groups occur.
